Most of the Toronto dwellers that I know all share the same issues.
We live in small cramped spaces...
I would like to talk about some tricks that you can do to make your
living space appear larger than it really is...
- Molding creates the illusion of more volume if it’s placed vertically on the walls.
- Hang draperies from the highest possible point below the molding letting the fabric flow downwards to the floor.
- Built- ins and bookcases take up very little space and can serve
many purposes including a bar area when you are entertaining,
or as an office area when needed. Built-ins in closets and
pantries are a great way to add more storage that we lack in
small spaces.
Built- in drawers under the bed can add storage and save
space because you will not be needing a dresser.
- Mirrors... I love them. They help expand the room and add
reflective light if hung in the proper spot. It can also reflect a
decorative piece as added value. Be very careful what it
reflects.
- It is important to keep rooms open and exposed in small spaces.
For an example a kitchen running into a living room…a set of
glass doors is the best solution allowing the light to be seen in
each room.
An open concept style is also a great way to solve the problem.
- Remember colours are very important in small spaces. From one
room to another, stay within the same warm or cool hues…as a
rule, the more similar two hues are, the more efficiently one
pushes the other.
- My favorite colour scheme for small spaces is using a
monochromatic colour scheme; this keeps a nice flow from
room to room and makes the space appear larger.
- You should try to keep the floor covering all the same... hardwood
or carpeting or at lest the same tones through out the space.
- Keep furniture in scale value, this will help a small room feel
comfortable and not crowed. Pick furniture that can be utilized for other
purposes such as an ottoman… can be used as a coffee table,
seating and storage. Nesting tables work very nice, because
you can move them around to the different seating and they
stack up to take up less space.
Small space requires minimizing the amount of items that are brought
in... remember sometimes less is more.
